Book Review. Soft Skills: The Software Developer’s Life Manual

I used to be a very rigid and close-minded person. Circa 2017/2018, I read “Soft Skills” by John Sonmez @simpleprogrammr (Who is agnostic, I’m a Muslim). Great book, by the way. It covers career paths, finances, nutrition, exercise, goal setting, planning, self-discipline, etc.

Everything was evidence-based. But the last chapter was quite superstitious and esoteric. Something that he mentioned is 100% his personal opinion and based on his experience.

It was talking about the influence that humans wield on their surroundings, that by believing in something hard enough, you can manifest it, the type of stuff that you read on “The Secret” and Napoleon Hill’s “Think and Grow Rich.”

I was like, “Where is God in this hubris!” Anyway, it didn’t take too long for that book to end up shredded in the nearest trash can.

I was reflecting lately, and even though my “Soft Skills” needed an intervention of a greater magnitude back then. Before reading that book, I had zero knowledge of goal setting, nutrition, exercise, and the other topics that I only know today because he decided to share.

So even if we don’t 100% agree with someone, maybe we can learn something from them.
